Adhesives

The main areas that you need to concentrate on are what type of adhesive to use in each situation and give one reason for your choice. 

Also know at least three advantages and three disadvantages of the main three adhesives ie. Animal/Hide glue, PVA and Urea Formaldehyde.

Furniture Terminology

Below are some examples of the Furniture terms that you could be asked about in your theory exam, there are many more in all of the different topics that you will be covering. It is better for you to try understanding them rather than committing them to memory. Remember that you will be required to sketch many different items in your theory exam so it is best to practice.

Furniture Joints

Below are some examples of the Furniture joints  that you could be asked about in your theory exam. You will need to be able to make a 3D sketch of the joint, correctly name it and give an example of where this joint might be used and why.

Remember you cannot say on a door, drawer table etc. you must show the examiner that you really know what the joint is eg. A lapped Dovetail used on the front of a drawer so no end grain is should on the drawer front.

Concentrate on joints used for Carcase construction, Drawers, Doors and Windows.
